Maybe I was being unrealistic, but I was looking for a book that was specific to the skill of running off road, maybe with some advice about the best techniques for different surfaces and appropriate training for them What I got was a beginner s guide to training plans such as you d find in any book on running and all over the internet and a guide to different types of off road running events, which is long on information and fairly short, considering the author s pedigree, on insight That the two most interesting sections are about biochemistry and compasses is a fairly sad indictment There seems to be one sentence in the whole book not an especially long book, admittedly about technique, and that basically says do whatever you fancy. As well as not coming anywhere near my expectations, it is extremely apparent that the book is ten years old not just from the lack of awareness of the importance of technique science, and the technology available in gear terms, have moved on quite a long way since it was written, and some sections reminded me of the earnestly patronising guidance you d get 20 years ago in instructional books on driving or cycling. It is also full of irritating errors spelling mistakes, grammar errors and odd missing words. If you are a running beginner, with an interest in off road running and the different events and disciplines, and you don t have access to the internet, then this might be a worthwhile purchase Otherwise I can t see why you d bother.
